1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV)

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action]. (AMP)

On the other hand, if we admit our sins–make a clean breast of them–he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. (MSG)

Sometimes we make an effort to cover up our foibles. To make it seem as though we never make mistakes [either big or small]. The problem with not admitting our sin is two-fold. 1) It could keep someone who is otherwise drawn to the faith away because they feel like mistakes aren’t allowed. 2) And it keeps us from our own blessings, without admitting to our sins we can’t accept the forgiveness and cleansing that God wants to extend to us.

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that fearth is not made perfect in love. (KJV)

There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection]. (AMP)

There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life–fear of death, fear of judgement–is one not yet fully formed in love. (MSG)

When we apply God’s perfect love to our life, we have no room for fear.  The preceding verses say that because we rest secure in God’s love for us, expressed in Jesus’ sacrifice for us on the cross, we don’t need to fear the day of judgement. Therefore, we ought to spend our time on earth demonstrating to others the same perfect and powerful love that God gives us.
