fast

Nehemiah 9:1-3

One the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust in their heads. Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors. They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God. {New International Version}

After the exile when the Israelites were able to return to Jerusalem, they spent a great deal of time reading the Book of the Law and re-implementing important festivals. They mourned and fasted and confessed the sins of their ancestors and themselves in the hope to restore their relationship with the LORD their God.

Sometimes it is necessary for us to do the same. Take some time to go to God and tell Him about our shortcomings (of course He already knows) and ask for help in doing our best going forward. It’s always good to take specific time to reflect on and renew our relationship with the heavenly Father.
